💬 'My son is almost three now, and I sometimes fantasise about life before him. It was much happier and easier then'
What I find tough is that I wasn’t sure about having a second in the first place, but everyone always asks when you’re going to do it; they ask as if you couldn’t possibly be happy with one. Like it’s cruel not to. I grew up an only child, really happily, and was fine with my son being one too. I had friends, he has friends. I had cousins my age, he’s got cousins his age. Lots of my friends who have siblings don’t actually get on with them anyway.
The problem is that I knew quite quickly, once I’d given birth, that my original gut feeling had been right. Things have gone from great to pretty bad since the second one came along. Three months before he was born, my husband got a new job which means he travels a lot now. Guess who is stuck doing double bedtime alone most nights, now? I resent him, although I know I’m technically not allowed to because he’s working hard for us.
means no holidays or trips or the things we used to like doing. The kids also share a room, which means I’m constantly waking one up while putting the other down, and bedtimes never seem to end., there’s no chance right now. People tell me that it’ll be so good when the boys really start playing together – they’ve not done that much yet – so I’m holding out a bit of hope for that. As it stands, though, I just think people who feel like they might be overwhelmed by two kids should stick to one.
