Dear Care and Feeding: I still remember when a girl in my neighborhood got a Barbie with curly hair.
But is it weird to grab up dolls to donate at the holidays? I mostly want to put them in the hands of kids, not collectors, but that money could be putting new socks on kids’ feet. There’s no way I can get enough for everyone.
I’ll still do my usual monetary donation, but this doll reminds me so much of when a girl in my neighborhood got Barbie’s friend with curly hair, and it felt like time stopped. I don’t exactly want that “oh, maybe I’m pretty after all” moment for anyone, but damn was it powerful, and I didn’t even get the doll myself. Is that more important than tangible, physical comfort that doesn’t challenge the status quo?I’ll keep this brief.
I believe you’re overthinking this. Is your heart in the right place? Are you centering the needs of others instead of putting yourself first? If so, then you’re doing more than most people who attempt to be allies. Not to mention, you could put some big smiles on the faces of kids who are seeing a mainstream character who looks like them. Socks are great and all, but there’s no substitute for that. Representation matters.I recently learned that my husband gambled himself into $20,000 of debt.
