If one of the royal children had a birthday, the Queen would pop into the local toy shop and personally select a different toy for every child visiting Balmoral. At one of the gun dog trials where it was bucketing with rain – as usual – I sought shelter in a tea hut and joined the long queue for a cuppa. I was so busy talking to a gamekeeper, I took no notice of the lady in front of me but when she turned, she spilled her tea straight down my sleeve. She flashed me a big smile and said, ‘Oh, excuse me.’ It was the Queen – queuing up patiently.
