Courtney Hodgkiss, 43, relies on PIP to pay her rent and taxi costs

Courtney Hodgkiss who relies on essential PIP payments and her husband’s income to pay her bills, transport costs and modifications to her houseA woman with Crohn’s disease who says the condition would leave her housebound without access to taxis paid for with herCourtney Hodgkiss, 43, was diagnosed with Crohn’s in 2009 and relies on a rollator walker to get around due to a range of historic health complications, including multiple organ failure and nerve damage in her feet and fingers.

She relies on her PIP and her husband’s income to pay her bills, transport costs and modifications to her house. But she worries a planned benefits shake up,that would see many recipients receiving less money than now as they would be offered different benefits based on their individual condition and specific needs.

But campaigners have warned that the changes proposed so far are “deeply concerning” and amount to “targeting disabled people”.The changes would affect more than 3 million people who are currently eligible for PIP, many of whom could lose out if it is deemed that they do not face higher living costs due to their disability.Ms Hodgkiss suffered with Crohn’s disease for eight years before applying to PIP in 2017, after hearing stories about how difficult the process of applying was.

“I just sat there for half an hour crying because it was the most humiliating experience of my life,” she said.“Not only had I sat there and been absolutely humiliated, I was then told I was a liar.” After her mobility deteriorated, she got reassessed and now receives the maximum available PIP.Crohn’s disease is a lifelong condition where parts of the digestive system become inflamed.Crohn’s disease affects people of all ages with the symptoms usually starting in childhood or early adulthood.
