On paper, Melanie Smooter has it all: She’s an up-and-coming New York City fashion designer who’s just gotten engaged to a dashing politician, Andrew Hennings . Life is looking up for her. Only, on the heels of her engagement, Melanie must now return home to Pigeon Creek, Alabama, to obtain a divorce from her husband Jake after seven years of separation.
Costumed by Sophie de Rakoff, her wardrobe straddles the line between dressy city style and country-casual chic. In New York City, for one, her wardrobe is sleek, elegant, and—naturally—all black. When she gets engaged to Andrew , Melanie is wearing with dangling diamond earrings. When she accepts his hand, he then looks around at all the engagement rings in their cases and simply says, “Pick one.” Her life is all veryWhen she returns home to Alabama, however, Melanie’s clothes start to subtly shift. At first, she still plays the part of a stuck-up city girl. When sheJake about finally signing the divorce papers, she shows up in a black off-the-shoulder top, a black-and-white floral skirt, knee-high boots, and tinted shades.
The pièce de résistance, though, is what happens at her wedding. Melanie—in her fitted white wedding dress—leaves Andrew at the altar and runs to Jake in the middle of a monsoon to proclaim her love for him. Standing in the middle of the rain in her ruined dress, it’s almost symbolic—that she no longer cares about looking perfect at all times and has finally found her footing in life.
