The super coach craves immediate success, but do the Rabbitohs have a squad capable of delivering it?
Bennett is smart. Deep down, he’ll know the Rabbitohs are probably on the cusp of a rebuild. They’ve got ageing players who have a similar number of years left on their deals, and with not a lot of upside.
I don’t know where rock bottom is for the Rabbitohs. The scary thing is they might not have reached that point. Penrith know exactly what they’re doing from the top right down to the bottom.
It might take them 30 minutes, it could be 50 or 60 minutes, but there will be a stage where they will go bang-bang-bang and put on a few quick tries. This week’s announcement Luke Keary will retire at the end of the season – to complement the imminent exits of Joseph Manu and Joseph Suaali’i to rugby union, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves to the Super League, and possibly Daniel Tupou – will free up a stack of money.
