and having your car stolen or set on fire seemed inevitable. The periods when I did want to learn never coincided with those when I had the money, spare time or guaranteed sobriety to go for it.
The few times I’ve mentioned that I don’t do it, I’ve been met with gravely serious nods, as though the person I’m talking to assumes I’ve been banned from the roads for some hideously reckless act. The alternative — that I just never got round to it — seems unthinkable. Despite having both motivation and enthusiasm, I am worried that my advancing years might put me at a disadvantage when it comes to picking up a new skill. Learning anything new just feels hard, like
