And it’s not just big, mean companies trying to tell us things, it’s as simple as hearing other people’s stories and realising that you’ve felt the exact same thing., aimed at teenagers, which provides medical advice in an attempt to prevent teenagers from doing exactly what I’ve become obsessed with – diagnosing themselves, and in some cases trying to treat themselves.

“The main risk, especially in young people, is that people might then attempt to follow treatment ‘hacks’ which are potentially dangerous to their health. There are a lot of social media creators out there who have a knack for making their content seem credible, whether it’s rooted in fact or not.” When you’re being bombarded by these videos, which feel like a connection to a stranger and leave you feeling less alone, it’s sort of hard not to feel like you must have the same condition that other person has. Why would I feel the same as them if it isn’t true?

But, it might just be like the curly hair thing. I may have just watched too many videos and absorbed a message which isn’t really meant for me. A bit like when I got obsessed with the film, wanted to be Edie Sedgewick and did a lot of orange paintings while wearing a leotard and black tights. In romantic fiction it’s a standard trope that the romantic hero will tell the heroine he loves her, and provide a long list of very specific reasons why. “I love you because you cry at sad movies, you bite your nails… etc”. It’s a romantic cliché because it works. All most of us want is to feel seen, understood, defined. And by extension: diagnosed.
