There were no signs warning that swimming was forbidden at a cove at a Pennsylvania lake where a 19-year-old died trying to save drowning relatives, his mother said.

His body was recovered Monday, Aug. 7, 2023, from Beltzville Lake outside Lehighton, Pennsylvania.It was Elizabeth Payano’s first time visiting the picturesque lake in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains with her family.from friends and family and drove to the Pennsylvania recreation area on Aug. 6 with her three children and other relatives.
Fifteen minutes after they arrived, Payano went to her car to get life jackets for the kids. That’s when she heard screaming. Though the state park prohibits people from swimming in the cove, Payano said visitors were in the water when the family arrived. There were no signs telling guests that swimming in the area was prohibited or could be dangerous, she said.
“The way everything happened, I just want to avoid other families and members, especially moms, that can be going through this situation that we are going through,” Payano said.
