I grew up in Iran; the protests there have been a long time coming | Opinion
An Iranian woman protests in Tehran on Oct. 1 after the death of a 22-year-old woman who had been detained by morality police.Iranians are in the streets. Ordinary people, high school kids, college students, and expats all are demonstrating. They have one universal slogan: “Woman, Life, Liberty.” They are demanding an Iran free of theocratic rule based on the narrowest of interpretation of Islam.
I still remember the day vividly when a clergy member told my high school class that we were free to choose. He added, “However, as Muslims, you must choose what Islam tells you to choose.” In a class of 45 students, we had so many different ideas and understandings, yet none mattered. The Mullah’s interpretation of Islam was indisputable. Ours was to obey; his was to be the voice of Islam.
