“I feel a lot better," Scott Lafleur said. "I can’t imagine what it’s like closer to the storm. I feel a lot safer being away from it."“I am really nervous about our dorm. I’m not going to lie. Being on the water, I mean, we have our own beach. It’s going to flood really bad, so it just depends on that,” Eckerd student, Sydney Logan, said.
Local hotels have been stepping up to accommodate the influx of Helene evacuees. Ronnie Nichols, the General Manager at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Port St. Lucie, has been preparing for the surge in guests.The hotel is one of many in our area now offering special rates for evacuees. Many guests are already planning to extend their stay as the full extent of the damage remains uncertain.
