Northern Lights ABC School’s spelling bee commenced on Feb 2. spanning from grades three through eight.
Sixth-grade student Josephina Reid said she didn’t know what to expect going into the competition. The spelling bee went through multiple rounds of elimination until the last two contestants, Josephina and Aman, went through multiple rounds of correctly spelling words.
“It feels good to win something,” Reid said. “All those words I studied. I was kind of worried about chandelier a tiny bit, but yeah ... most of those were good.”“My mom and dad would quiz me in the car when we rode, my dad quizzed me when I rode to school sometimes,” she explained. “That did help a lot.”“We’re very proud of Josephina, needless to say,” Josephina’s mother said. “She wasn’t cocky, but she was - what was the word? Courage, right? Courageous.” Josephina also won fourth place in Battle of the Books earlier in the week, attributing her wins to her love for reading. “Read a lot, because then you’ll find very good vocabulary. Don’t just read graphic novels,” she said. “If you’re going to the spelling bee, just study a lot, because that helps a lot.” Josephina’s next step is the online qualifier that will determine whether she makes it to the state spelling bee in March. When asked how it feels to move on to the next level, she said she is really nervous, but happy to have participated in and won the Northern Lights Spelling Bee.‘The kids don’t deserve that’: Scouting America troop trailer worth thousands of dollars stolen An Anchorage security guard was shot while doing his job.
