Kelly became so indebted to a loan shark she considered handing her kids to social services and jumping off a bridge
For Kelly it all started with £100. All she needed was some extra cash to make sure her kids could have a decent, healthy meal.
The woman had presented herself to Kelly as a friend and offered to lend her the £100 she needed until she got paid her Universal Credit payment at the end of the month. "Because I was desperate and stupid at the time I went back to her and asked to borrow the money again until I got paid and that's just how it went on," she said.
"She said to me I had no chance of keeping her waiting till the Monday and I had to get it to her before. She just said 'these are not people you want to mess around with.' After chatting to the team, Kelly realised she'd paid the woman a total of £26,400 despite only borrowing around £2,500 from her. In total, she owed the woman around £43,000.
"They would have gone to school and someone would have picked them up and taken them and then I was going to go and jump off a bridge because I thought if I was dead she can't get a penny. I thought about doing this multiple times."
