And she does not shy away from stating winning Wimbledon as her aim, rather than the clichés about taking “one match at a time” or there being “so many good players out there”.“I got to No 3, now No 5. If there’s no pressure now, when is it gonna be? The better you do, the more pressure and the more expectations people are gonna have from you. But the year is so long. We play for 11 months, 10, 11 months so you cannot be having every week at your peak.
Sakkari has packed her schedule with three tournaments on grass ahead of Wimbledon, reaching the semi-finals of a stacked draw in Berlin before losing a close match to Belinda Bencic. She will start her Wimbledon campaign on Monday against Australia’s Zoe Hives. “Wimbledon means a lot to everyone because it’s not all about points,” Sakkari adds.
“I grew up with the love for the sport and it’s fine. If you do well, this year, you’re gonna get awarded with points [at other tournaments] and doesn’t really matter if that one tournament doesn’t have points. “Of course for some players, it’s tough because they cannot defend the points but I’m gonna go in there and try to win. That’s my goal. And that’s what I’m going to try and do from my first match.”
