Lawmakers on Wednesday gathered to hold a moment of silence for the UGA student killed last month.
After the resolution was read, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones spoke and held a moment of silence for the UGA student killed last month."I am a heartbroken man; part of my purpose has been taken," Jason Riley said before urging lawmakers to pass legislation to crack down on illegal immigration in Georgia.
UGA Police received a call just around noon from a friend who grew concerned when she didn't return. Officers then responded to the area at 12:38 p.m. and immediately began searching for her 20 minutes after they received the call. Riley, a Woodstock native, attended River Ridge High School in Cherokee County, where she ran on the cross-country team.
Augusta University said they are in a partnership with UGA, allowing students to participate in UGA campus activities.Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, was arrested in connection with Laken Riley's killing. Ibarra is charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, false imprisonment, kidnapping, concealing the death of another and hindering a 911 call.
