A sinkhole on I-80 east in Wharton, New Jersey, is expected to be repaired and reopened to traffic on Monday, according to state Department of Transportation officials.
State Department of Transportation crews have made significant progress filling a sinkhole that closed part of I-80 east in Wharton , New Jersey. The sinkhole, which appeared on Thursday, measured 40 feet by 40 feet and caused massive traffic jams. Officials initially predicted the eastbound lane would reopen on Monday at 9 a.m. but pushed back the timeframe due to weather conditions affecting Sunday night's paving.
While paving is ongoing, state officials advise commuters traveling east on I-80 before the reopening to use detours and an alternative route at Exit 28 in Roxbury. As of Sunday evening, final paving, re-striping, and the installation of guide rails remain to be completed before the highway can reopen. Officials are cautiously optimistic that I-80 eastbound will reopen Monday if no unforeseen problems arise during the finalization of the work.
