IDOT cameras in the nearby area did not show the crashes, however, they did provide a glimpse at the snow- and ice-covered road conditions on I-57. ‼️ Multiple crashes have occurred along I-57 between Mattoon and Tuscola. These closures are expected to last several more hours, and detours are in place. In addition, there have been multiple crashes along I-55 in Springfield, primarily affecting southbound traffic. 🧵Illinois Department of Transportation advised drivers to avoid unnecessary travel Saturday as snowfall accumulated amid wintry conditions that developed in the late morning."If you must travel, please take it slow, increase your following distance, and allow extra time to reach your destination," IDOT said in a post on social media. Snow was largely expected between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., with most of the accumulation occurring between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.Reduced visibility, snow covered roads and hazardous travel were all expected in downstate Illinois Saturday, with snowfall primarily in the region below I-80, according to the National Weather Service. "Be careful if traveling today as it may be more difficult to keep roads cleared as treatment can be less effective in very cold temperatures," NWS warned on social media Saturday. Snow will continue to fall this afternoon south of Interstate 80 with heaviest snowfall south of a Pontiac to Fowler line.
