Hyundai is reportedly testing its Atlas humanoid robots at US plants to gather data and assess real-world performance.

Hyundai Motor has reportedly begun testing humanoid robots at its automobile manufacturing facilities in the United States. The company said it has been running proof-of-concept trials of the humanoid robot unveiled at CES 2026 at its US plants since late last year.

The trials, taking place at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia, aim to evaluate real-world performance and gather operational data ahead of possible commercialization. In early January, Hyundai announced its plans to deploy a scalable platform capable of integrating up to 30,000 humanoid robots per year by 2028 to automate repetitive factory work.Humanoids hit productionHyundai has said it plans to deploy Atlas, the humanoid robot developed by its robotics unit Boston Dynamics, at its Georgia manufacturing facility starting in 2028. In the initial phase, Atlas robots will be assigned to parts sorting tasks. From around 2030, their role is expected to expand to include more complex assembly operations within the factory, according to Korea Biz Wire. The South Korean automaker also revealed the production version of the Atlas humanoid robot during its CES 2026 keynote in Las Vegas on January 5. Hyundai said it plans to shift from traditional hardware-focused robotics to AI-driven systems, aligning with its broader goal of developing human-centered “Physical AI” for factory operations.Leveraging Boston Dynamics’ robots, including Atlas and Spot, along with its manufacturing expertise, Hyundai aims to develop robots that can collaborate with humans, learn quickly, and improve continuously. Hyundai says Atlas can lift to 110 pounds and operate in industrial environments with temperatures ranging from -4°F to 104°F.According to Boston Dynamics, the quadruped Spot has been deployed in over 40 countries for inspection, data collection, and safety monitoring. Meanwhile, the warehouse robot Stretch has handled unloading 20 million boxes since 2023. Atlas, the humanoid robot, features 56 degrees of freedom and is designed to work alongside humans, managing high-risk and repetitive tasks while adapting to changing needs and improving efficiency.Hyundai embraces AIHyundai is advancing efforts to integrate humanoid robots into factories by developing Software-Defined Factories that collect large volumes of data and enable robots to continuously update their skills. These SDFs aim to make production faster, more flexible, and more efficient by allowing robots to learn and adapt in real time.To support this, Hyundai is establishing Robot Metaplant Application Centers where robots are trained to perform tasks such as lifting, turning, assembling, and problem-solving. The company is partnering with NVIDIA to leverage AI computing power and simulation technology to accelerate robot learning and development. In parallel, Hyundai is progressing its smart vehicle strategy, a key component of its future mobility roadmap. The company is developing a smart-car demonstration model, with a limited release possible in the second half of this year. Hyundai plans to launch a fully software-defined vehicle platform by 2028, which will rely heavily on software to control vehicle functions and enable ongoing updates. As the deployment of humanoid robots and smart vehicles approaches, Hyundai anticipates growing demand for high-performance computing. To meet this need, the company has said it plans to acquire 50,000 Nvidia Blackwell graphics processing units, though no timeline has been set for their deployment across operations. These initiatives position Hyundai at the forefront of AI-driven manufacturing and mobility innovation.Hyundai’s humanoids face labor agreement hurdles Hyundai’s hymnaoid deployment news may have garnered industry praise and attention. However, last week, Hyundai Motor’s labor union in South Korea strongly opposed the company’s plans to deploy humanoid robots in factories, citing job security concerns. The labor force warned that no robot will be allowed to enter the workplace unless there is a labor-management agreement in place.
