The rush to capitalize on recent interest in weight-loss medication such as Ozempic and Wegovy is shining the spotlight on one of the gray areas of healthcare marketing

The barrage of ads around the drugs, which create a feeling of satiety by mimicking a hormone produced in the gut called GLP-1, is growing more difficult for people recovering from eating disorders to ignore, said Kristina Saffran, the co-founder and chief executive of Equip, a virtual eating disorder treatment program.

Novo Nordisk believes the Ozempic shortages are temporary and said it would continue to advertise the drug to raise its awareness among people with Type 2 diabetes, a spokeswoman said.Subway stations in New York City this week are covered in posters that show people injecting their thighs and stomachs with Wegovy, part of an ad campaign from the healthcare provider Roman Health Ventures Inc., which does business as Ro.

The highly visible subway campaign is part of an evolution in GLP-1 marketing from earlier days characterized by TV commercials focused on diabetes and social-media advertising promoting weight loss.
