Hype and drama in the run up to Zimbabwe by-elections, but status quo maintained | News24

The by-elections held on Saturday had all the trademarks of a typical Zimbabwean election: tension, drama, intrigue, mass rallies, accusations, counter-accusations, and newly found generosity by the contestants. | CdeLENIN

The results of the by-elections were inconsequential in terms of the composition of Zimbabwe's parliament.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa and CCC leader Nelson Chamisa descended on all the cities and districts where polls were scheduled, literally pulling out all the stops to convene colourful, well-attended, and massively publicised rallies to drum up support. Buoyed by the large crowds and hype, both men declared"victory". However, the usual"suspects" Douglas Mwonzora - the police - deemed to be partisan to the incumbent, could not be outdone.

Not to be outdone, the CCC used everything on wheels – from small vehicles to haulage trucks to deliver supporters to venues for Chamisa to address. Voters queue to cast their ballots at a polling station during a by-election in Amaveni township, Kwekwe.As is custom with elections in Zimbabwe, the opposition CCC cried foul, charging that the elections management body was aiding the ruling party by creating irregularities in the voters' roll.

The ruling party's spokesperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa, expressed happiness over the by-election results.
