Conscious Aerospace is betting on retrofit economics, positioning its hydrogen-powered Dash 8 as a practical solution for regional airlines.
Dutch hydrogen propulsion start-up Conscious Aerospace is accelerating development of its 2MW-class fuel cell powertrain, targeting flight tests on a De Havilland Canada Dash 8-300 within three years. The company is positioning the retrofit as a near-term, lower-emissions solution for regional aviation rather than a long-range future bet.
Founder Michel van Ierland said recent partner meetings signal readiness to scale development efforts. The program includes collaboration with Aeronamic, fuel cell supplier EH Group, and Senior Aerospace.Partners push next phaseVan Ierland said the program has moved beyond early-stage coordination, according to FlightGlobal.“Since the partners are all on board we are really making the next step. We are preparing an iron bird test on a rig two years from now,” he said. The company has not finalized the iron bird’s exact configuration. However, it will closely resemble the production system. That system targets 2.1MW peak output.Engineers will conduct ground tests at a new hydrogen facility run by the Dutch aerospace institute NLR. The site sits in Marknesse and supports early validation work.Meanwhile, the team is approaching a preliminary design review milestone. Van Ierland expects that process to conclude within months. The company has yet to select an electric motor supplier. Van Ierland said a shortlist of three candidates remains under evaluation. A decision is expected soon.Thermal management remains another open design challenge. The system will affect both aircraft weight and aerodynamic drag. Van Ierland declined to share specifics but emphasized partner commitment. “Our partners like Senior are making an investment because they believe in the business case.”Funding and airline interestThe Dutch government has already backed the project with €73 million under its green aviation initiative. Conscious Aerospace is now advancing its Series A round to fund the next development phase.“There’s good appetite in the market,” van Ierland said. He added that selecting aligned investors remains a priority. The company continues working with De Havilland Canada to ensure the retrofit integrates with the Dash 8-300 airframe. That aircraft serves as the launch platform.Internal projections suggest improved performance over earlier estimates. Van Ierland said payload and range exceed initial expectations. The hydrogen-powered Dash 8-300 could achieve a range of 404 nautical miles. That covers roughly 90% of current routes flown by the aircraft.“We are not creating a new market. Running a regional airline is quite price sensitive – what we didn’t want to do was create a new market,” he said.Airline engagement is also expanding. Conscious Aerospace has agreements with KLM and Transavia. The company is also seeing strong interest across Asia-Pacific markets.Van Ierland pointed to large Dash 8-300 fleets in Australia and New Zealand. He also confirmed the company holds several undisclosed letters of intent.“Are they going to wait until 2040 or would they rather have a near-term solution implemented?” he said.Conscious Aerospace also sees potential in defense and security missions. These include coastguard, maritime surveillance, and patrol operations.Van Ierland said the system could meet endurance requirements for extended missions. He added that performance aligns with standard operational profiles. The company is working with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency to define certification pathways. This effort will support future flight testing and regulatory approval.Despite broader ambitions, Conscious Aerospace remains focused on the Dash 8 platform. The company currently employs around 20 engineers.“I have to keep everyone focused and try to prevent scope-creep,” van Ierland said.
