A grieving widower is suing a U.S. safari company after his wife was killed in a hippopotamus attack in Zambia. He alleges that the company failed to ensure her safety and properly vet the tour guides.

A grieving widower is suing a U.S. safari company, alleging it failed to ensure his wife's safety during a deadly hippopotamus attack in Zambia. Craig Manders filed the lawsuit against African Portfolio in Stamford, Connecticut, on February 5th. The lawsuit states that during a guided walk in June, a hippopotamus charged from the water, grabbed Lisa Manders, crushed her head and body, and killed her.

According to the lawsuit, the tour guides, including at least one armed with a rifle, did not intervene or help the couple during the attack. \Lisa Manders, 70, from Cranford, New Jersey, suffered catastrophic injuries and died shortly after the attack. Her husband, Craig Manders, is seeking monetary damages and accountability for his wife's death. He is also aiming to prevent similar tragedies from happening to others in the future. The lawsuit alleges that African Portfolio did not adequately screen, supervise, or train the tour guides, and that they encouraged and permitted the couple to be exposed to an avoidable and dangerous encounter with the hippopotamus. \African Portfolio denies the allegations, stating that they are not negligent or reckless in connection with Lisa Manders' death. Their lawyer, Rodney Gould, maintains that they only arranged the couple's lodging and that the tour guides were provided by Chiawa Safaris, the owners of the lodging in Zambia. Gould also states that African Portfolio has an excellent reputation and that they were not negligent in vetting Chiawa. The company plans to either ask a judge to dismiss the lawsuit or request that the matter go to arbitration, according to Gould.
