'Hurts a lot': Pearland's state championship loss to Flower Mound still stings
Damian Landry of Pearland reacts after his single in the first inning of the Class 6A state championship game during the UIL State Baseball Championships at Dell Diamond on Saturday, June 10, 2023 in Round Rock.PEARLAND — The sun rose Sunday morning, and it emerged again Monday when a handful of Pearland’s varsity baseball players worked the PHS summer camp at the OilerS’ baseball complex.
Pearland’s pitching, which was outstanding in 10 of its 12 playoff games, wasn’t as efficient as it had been in Saturday’s loss. “You need base hits when there are no outs or just one out. When we start rallies with two outs, nine times out of 10 that doesn’t do much for this team.”“The most disappointing thing was going all this way and getting second place,” the University of Houston signee said. “It just didn’t go our way. That’s how the cards fell.”
“I felt we could have been a little more patient. You look at all the opportunities we had and all it would have taken is one more timely hit and it’s a different outcome.”“We didn’t capitalize,” he said. “It happens — it’s part of baseball.
