Hurricane season concerns in Florida: Influx of newcomers, COVID19 variants and supply chain issues hurricanes2022 supplychain
Of the 61,728 New Yorkers who in 2021 handed over Empire State driver’s licenses for a Florida license, 19,100 or 31% got IDs with Broward, Miami-Dade or Palm Beach County Zip codes. Palm Beach County accounted for 8,107 of the transplants, the largest share of any county in the state.
During 2017’s Hurricane Irma, an estimated 6.8 million Floridians fled their homes. Many weren’t in evacuation zones, which are based on storm surge, not wind speed. That caused gridlock on Florida’s Turnpike and a stronger call from officials for people not in evacuation zones to consider the integrity of their homes before leaving. If the home is hurricane-fortified, it’s likely better to stay put.
Graham emphasized people can’t just listen to the initial forecasts for a pending storm, noting the nation’s strongest landfalling hurricanes, including Andrew, Charley, Michael, Laura and Ida, were all tropical storms three days before reaching the coast. Palm Beach County Mayor Robert Weinroth said the conference accounts for 3,000 nights in local hotels and has an overall economic impact of $2.5 million. Representatives from 29 states, two foreign countries and 65 of 67 Florida counties attended this week’s conference, which runs through Friday. In 2020 there were 30 named storms, including 14 hurricanes, of which seven were major hurricanes. Last year had 21 named storms, seven hurricanes, of which four became major hurricanes.
But leading forecasts from Colorado State University, AccuWeather, The Weather Company and Weatherbell all call for an active to very active hurricane season easily topping the 30-year norm of 14 named storms, including seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher. CSU’s April 7 prediction for this season calls for 19 named storms with nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes.
