Tens of thousands of more Florida residents impacted by Hurricane Ian can apply for financial assistance.

So far, more than $268 million in federal disaster assistance has been approved for over 178,000 individuals and households “to help jumpstart their recoveries,” said FEMA in a statement released Wednesday.FEMA and the state of Florida activated the Transitional Shelter Assistance Program, which allows FEMA to make payments directly to participating hotels and motels in Alabama, Florida and Georgia that provide emergency shelter to survivors.

Even before the application process begins online or in person, Floridians who qualify will need to assemble some important documents and information to share with FEMA officials. Here’s the “Disaster Survivor Checklist”:FEMA requires that the applicant, another adult member or minor child in a household have a Social Security number. The other requirements: At least one household member must be a U.S. citizen or legal U.S. resident.FEMA requires an applicant’s current insurance coverage.

Disaster relief applicants should also keep handy a set of notes to track when they applied, passwords and application registration numbers or other vital information to follow up on their FEMA applications.
