Hurricane Ian is set to be the deadliest tropical cyclone to hit Florida since 1935, when the Great Labor Day Hurricane killed over 400 people.
Death toll estimates in Florida have risen above 100, with a large portion of the deaths coming from Lee County. Most of those deaths were from drowning.The Federal Emergency Management Agency said on Sunday that more than 1,600 people have been rescued in parts of Southwest and Central Florida.
AccuWeather staff predicted Ian will be the most damaging storm to hit the state since Hurricane Harvey in 2017, which cost Florida $190 billion in damages. AccuWeather founder Joel Myers said Ian could lead to almost $210 billion in damages in the United States. As of Monday, close to 2 million people were without power, and 20,000 people are in shelters statewide.Ian made landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast on Wednesday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane. After sweeping across the state to the Atlantic Ocean, it made landfall again as a Category 1 hurricane in South Carolina.
