Aviation experts say the storm will likely cause nationwide disruptions. “There will be few air travelers not affected one way or the other by Ian this week, especially if strong or long-lasting storms and heavy rain impact Atlanta or other major airports,” says Kathleen Bangs, spokesperson for FlightAware. “There’s a strong chance we’re still looking down the barrel for high delays and cancellations as Ian begins to directly impact the U.S.” Major airlines are issuing travel waivers allowing passengers flying in or out of impacted airports to rebook without paying the fare difference. But the rules for changing tickets differs from carrier to carrier. For example, while the travel waivers offered by American Airlines and Delta Air Lines each cover 16 airports, they are different lists, and the airlines stipulate different rebooking deadlines.
