A storm came ashore with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph just east of the mouth of the Aucilla River, about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, according to the National Hurricane Center. Helene weakened to a Category 1 storm as it moved across Georgia overnight. High winds and rain are still a threat. Hurricane and tropical storm warnings were in effect across coastal areas of southern Florida into the morning. A storm surge warning was in effect for almost all of Florida ’s west coast.
