Hurricane Helene has caused widespread damage in Western North Carolina, leaving thousands homeless and hundreds of thousands without power. The death toll is feared to be rising as dozens remain missing following the storm's passage.

The death toll could also be rising because there are believed to be dozens of people missing since the rising waters came through communities in the storm's path, officials said.
