Another storm expected to become a hurricane far out in Atlantic.
A tropical disturbance could form in the Caribbean and move into the southern Gulf of Mexico this week. As of Tuesday it has a medium chance of becoming a tropical depression in the Gulf, but its eventual track and strength were very uncertain. Forecasters were also tracking Tropical Storm Kirk and a tropical wave that could become a depression soon. Neither of those systems was a threat to the U.S.
Forecasters on Tuesday were giving the disturbance a 40 percent probability of becoming a tropical depression in the next seven days, which is unchanged from Monday. There is no clear consensus on what the system could do and where it could go. And it comes just days after Hurricane Helene devastated parts of Florida and the Southeast with storm surge and catastrophic inland flooding.
