Newly released data from the National Hurricane Center reveals that Hurricane Beryl may have been a stronger storm than initially reported at landfall in southeast Texas. The updated analysis suggests Beryl was nearly a Category 2 hurricane, challenging earlier assessments.

National Hurricane Center forecasters have revealed new insights into the strength of Hurricane Beryl during its landfall in southeast Texas. After each hurricane season, the National Hurricane Center conducts a thorough re-evaluation of all storms, and in their recent analysis of Beryl , they discovered compelling evidence suggesting the storm was nearly a Category 2 hurricane at landfall.

This revised assessment significantly updates the initial reports that indicated peak wind speeds of 80 mph. Beryl, the first major hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, gained notoriety for reaching Category 4 intensity over the weekend. To understand the factors behind Beryl's intensification, National Weather Service meteorologist Tim Cady was consulted. He pointed to the phenomenon known as the 'Brown Ocean Effect,' where post-landfall storms can experience further strengthening if conditions remain favorable. Cady explained that the marshy, saturated soils where Beryl made landfall could have acted as fuel, contributing to its intensification. In addition to favorable wind patterns, Beryl gained over 20 mph of intensity before reaching land. The storm's rapid movement, however, prevented it from reaching even higher categories. Despite its quick passage, Beryl remained a Category 1 hurricane for several hours after landfall, highlighting its sustained strength. Had the intensification begun earlier, the storm potentially could have reached a higher category, according to meteorologist Ballard. Beryl's case underscores the complexities of hurricane forecasting and the ongoing efforts to improve our understanding of these powerful weather events
