Huntsville is likely to find its new police chief from within the department.
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle speaks at a COVID-19 briefing in January 2021. Indications suggest Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle will promote from within to hire a new police chief.
History is also a strong indicator how Battle will proceed in naming McMurray’s successor. Battle has appointed three chiefs since becoming mayor in 2008 and all three were longtime Huntsville police officers and promoted from within: Mark Hudson, Lewis Morris and McMurray. “We keep a tally on our top management all the time as to who can come in and step in and fill a position,” Battle said. “And we’re very fortunate in the police department have a number of people who can be there.”
