There are no eyes, just sockets full of fat, feasting maggots, but I get the creeping sense that it’sThe door creaks inward. Naturally, the door with the morbid skeleton knocker on an abandoned mountain would creak. How predictable. Against my better judgment, we duck inside and follow a narrow tunnel carved through the mountainside. The gloom is as heavy as a thick mist, and our boots slap against the stone as we burrow farther in a single file, sheep to the slaughter. Faint light spills across a stony wall, nudging us to take a sharp right. We’re funneled into a cavernous room, the ceilings vaulted to dizzying heights. Rusted metal beams arc across the top; fitted between them are panes of beaded glass, fogged and streaked with a grimy film. Something swoops past Mullory’s head and she ducks mid-shriek. Another crow, or rather the remains of a crow, caws past us. It’s a skeletal abomination, the bones mashed together at odd joints so that the wings are uneven and its flight choppy. No eyes in this one either, but it tips its head from side to side, a disturbingly watchful gesture. With a quick sulfur pinch of kerosene, flames catch on a row of lanterns handing from the rafters, flooding the space with warm light. There’s a, the creaking of sleeping joints being cracked into place. Bone grinding against bone. Tucked in every corner and perched on the beams are thousands of these skeletal crows. Roused by our presence, their misshapen skulls swivel at odd angles, joints backward and lopsided. None of us say a thing. Not even the grand master, the classically trained pianist himself, makes a peep. Eyes adjusting to the light, I notice piles of metal, several feet tall and stacked in every corner. Mullory picks off a piece, revealing on old, rusted key. One of the crows nips angrily at her ankles and she tosses it back. There must be thousands of these antique keys, protected by their dead guardians.Mullory approaches the back wall, a slab of stone that easily reaches thirty feet, speckled with holes, like Swiss cheese.
