Thousands of drivers in Ukraine are embarking on what Rich called suicide missions to bring vans full of chicken to people who’ve gone days without food. Many of the drivers are new employees who turned to MHP after the closing of other companies, including MHP’s competitors. “Getting food to people in Ukraine is tricky,” said Graham Gordon, U.K.-based head of policy at the nonprofit Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, the world’s second-biggest humanitarian network after the Red Cross. “We’re really pushing for the humanitarian corridors. People need to be able to get out of cities that are getting bombed.”
A driver might drop off supplies on the outskirts of a town. Some areas are so dangerous that only the Red Cross can go beyond a certain point. In exchange for transporting chicken, MHP has provided fuel to the Red Cross and has also helped support busing women and children out of the most dangerous zones.
MHP, whose shares trade publicly in London, reported profit of $600 million last year on revenue of $2.2 billion. The company employs 28,000 people in Ukraine, and adding their families and stakeholders along MHP’s supply chain, the company claims it’s responsible for 250,000 Ukrainians. It has helped many of its employees’ families get out of the country.
“If we get the opportunity to plant in the next three weeks, and we plant and we harvest, then we’re still facing a significant shortfall,” Rich says. “The danger time for everybody is if Ukraine can’t plant in the next three weeks. That will have a significant impact.”
