The excitement was palpable in Cupertino Community Hall on Friday night as members of the community gathered to welcome a new City Council – and to see who would be elected as the city’s new mayor and vice mayor.
Ahead of the ceremony, attendees said they were excited to welcome the new councilmembers, sensing a change in the city’s political landscape looming over the horizon. “There was a political group that had a lot of candidates before — now, there’s kind of a change in that,” said Richard Lowenthal, who served as Cupertino’s mayor from 2001-2002 and 2005-2006. “The council was majority Better Cupertino — it still is today, but it won’t be tomorrow.”
Seema Lindskog, a Cupertino resident involved in several community organizations, said she feels like the induction of the new councilmembers is an exciting opportunity for Cupertino to take control of its future. “I’ve been through quite a few of these, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one so well-attended,” Lowenthal said. “Today’s kind of a day to set aside the political differences and just thank people for serving – I disagree with the outgoing members a lot, but I’m busy thanking them today because they served hard, they’ve done what they thought was right for the people of Cupertino.”
