A storm system moved through the Bay Area, bringing with it the rumble of accompanying thunder, pea-sized hail and moderate showers.

of all strikes, but because this storm system came from a much colder air mass, more of a positive charge was able to build up.

“With the way the atmosphere is charged and the freezing levels are really low, it’s easier to get those types of strikes,” Miller said. “We do tend to get more of them with winter storms; they’re fairly common when it’s colder." Some of the lightning could be seen in the northern portions of Sonoma and Napa counties, coastal Marin County and the northern parts of San Mateo County on the Peninsula, Miller said. About a tenth to a half of an inch of rain accompanied the lightning and thunder across the Bay Area over the last 24 hours, with three-day rainfall totals averaging from about a quarter-inch to a half-inch of rain in most lower-elevation areas to about an inch of rain in the Sonoma and Marin hills.

“All of the more focused, steady, long-lasting rain, we’re through all of that,” Miller said Sunday. “We’re left with scattered showers today and tomorrow, and while we won’t see long-lasting rain, we’ll get brief periods of it where we could see moderate rainfall and, with cold air aloft, even some small hail as well.”
