Hundreds of San Diego Unified classrooms suffered high temperatures during the recent heat wave due to failures in air conditioning — even after the district has gotten billions in voter-approved bond money for facilities, plus millions in pandemic aid that included funding for HVAC improvements.

Top priority are those that deal with immediate health and safety, such as issues involving fire, smoke or a burning smell, Hensley said. When HVAC systems are turned off to save on utilities, or turn off automatically whenever a door or window opens, the frequent on-and-off causes strain to the systems, Ehm added.
