Both Russia and Ukraine have reported inflicting significant losses during fighting for control of the eastern city in recent days.

| Ukrainian forces faced relentless Russian attacks on Bakhmut in its eastern Donetsk region on Monday, with both sides reporting mounting enemy casualties as they battled across a small river that bisects the ruined town and now marks the front line.

Russia’s defence ministry said earlier in the day that its forces had killed more than 220 Ukrainian service members over the past 24 hours in the Donetsk region.Reuters could not independently verify battlefield reports and neither side gave details of their own casualties. Ukraine repelled attacks near four settlements in the Bakhmut area, where at least 11 settlements came under fire over the past day, the military said.Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Sunday the situation in Bakhmut was “tough, very tough”.“The closer we are to the centre of the city, the harder the fighting ... The Ukrainians throw in endless reserves. But we are advancing, and we will be advancing,” Mr Prigozhin said in comments released by his press service.

Analysts expect a Ukrainian counteroffensive to begin in earnest over April-May as the weather improves and more military aid arrives, including heavy Leopard and Challenger tanks.

Ukraine’s fighting ‘spirit’ plays major role in war against Russia: Richard KempUkraine’s fighting ‘spirit’ plays major role in war against Russia: Richard KempFormer British commander Richard Kemp says the Ukrainian soldiers’ morale to fight plays a major part in the war, but the army needs greater military support in order to succeed. “You can have all the equipment you want, you can have all the ammunition you want, you can have all the tanks you want, but if you don’t have the fighting spirit to use them and go above and beyond, even at times when you know there is a very good chance you will die, then you are not going to do as well as the side who has that,” he told Sky News Australia. “On the one hand, we got Ukraine that does have that spirit, they are fighting for their lives, they are fighting for their men and women to their left and right. “The Russians on the other hand, they don’t really know what they are fighting for in many cases, they are just sent there.”
