Demonstrators pelted Paris police with Molotov cocktails and fireworks, torched building materials and smashed up bus stops

over President Emmanuel Macron’s controversial pension reforms led to more than 290 arrests and over 100 police officers being injured.

Mr Darmanin said police had been confronted by “thugs” looking to “kill police officers and attack the property of others”. He added: “Everyone should condemn the unacceptable violence against law enforcement. Too many are silent in the face of such terrible images. The extreme left must be fought by everyone.”It is not clear how many protesters were injured as police deployed batons, tear gas and water cannon against them.

“They are trying to change the subject quite quickly, but let’s say it’s not working. So much the better!” said sculptor Antoine Eveillo.
