A robotics collaboration will combine AI models with industrial robots to improve automation through real-world deployment and training.
Agile Robots SE said this week that it is working with Google DeepMind, Alphabet’s AI research lab, in a collaboration aimed at combining DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics foundation models with Agile Robots ’ scalable industrial robotics platform.
The partnership focuses on integrating advanced AI models with industrial robotics hardware to improve robot performance and expand automation capabilities across industrial environments. The companies plan to combine DeepMind’s AI models with Agile Robots’ robotics systems to create more capable robotic platforms that can operate in real-world production settings.Founded in 2018, Agile Robots said its Agile ONE humanoid builds on its existing portfolio, which includes the Agile Hand, the FR3 force-sensitive robotic arm, the Diana 7 power and force-limited arm, and the Thor series robot arms.Exploring the opportunityThe Germany-based company said it designed Agile ONE to work safely and efficiently alongside people and other systems in industrial settings.“Agile Robots has already installed over 20,000 robotics solutions worldwide, proving intelligent automation at scale,” stated Zhaopeng Chen, founder and CEO of Agile Robots. “The huge opportunity ahead lies in autonomous, intelligent production systems that can transform entire industries. Integrating Google DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics models into our robotic solutions positions us at the cutting edge of this rapidly growing market,” he continued. Improving robot performanceBy combining Agile Robots’ hardware and AI systems with Google DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics foundation models, the firms aim to improve robotic performance through real-world deployment, data collection, model training, and continuous iteration.According to Chen, the collaboration will follow multiple development and deployment phases focused on improving robotic capabilities in real-world environments.“The collaboration is structured as a series of development and deployment phases focused on improving robotic capabilities in real-world environments,” Chen said, speaking to The Robot Report. “The teams are working in an iterative cycle, continuously testing, learning, and improving system performance. As the collaboration progresses, we expect to share updates on key advancements over time,” he said. The companies said the initial focus will be on high-value industrial applications, particularly in sectors with strong demand for adaptable, reliable automation. These include industrial and manufacturing tasks that require reliability and scalability. They also described the collaboration as creating an “AI flywheel,” where robots deployed in real-world environments generate operational data that improves AI models, which in turn enhance robot capabilities and enable broader deployment.Deepening the partnershipsGoogle DeepMind has been expanding its collaborations across the robotics industry as it advances AI-powered robotics systems.Earlier this year, the firm announced plans to work with Boston Dynamics to enhance the capabilities of the Atlas humanoid using Gemini Robotics’ foundation models. The company is also partnering with Apptronik, where its foundation models are being applied to the Apollo humanoid robot platform. Meanwhile, Intrinsic Innovation LLC has recently joined Google as a separate unit. The group is expected to continue developing its robotics platform while leveraging Google Gemini models and Google Cloud infrastructure, and collaborating closely with Google DeepMind on future robotics initiatives.
