Human Technopole (HT), an interdisciplinary research institute in Milan, is seeking two postdoctoral researchers to join a project investigating the molecular mechanisms regulating Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) latency within human trigeminal ganglion neurons. The successful candidates will develop novel human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-based culture systems and organoid models combined with CRISPR screens.
Human Technopole is an interdisciplinary research institute in Milan created and supported by the Italian government to develop innovative strategies promoting human health. HT adopts a multidisciplinary and integrated approach combining genomics, computational and structural biology, neuroscience, and data and decision sciences. The Harschnitz Group studies the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie susceptibility to viral and autoimmune disease of the human nervous system.
Grant n. FIS-2023-03708 CUP B53C24009410001 Project “Dissecting HSV-1 Latency and Reactivation using Trigeminal Organoids - 3D HSV” in the framework of the FONDO ITALIANO PER LA SCIENZA 2022-2023 We are looking for highly motivated, independent, and creative stem cell biologists and virologists to study the mechanisms underlying HSV-1 latency and reactivation in human stem cell-based models. The postdoctoral fellows will use a combination of state-of-the-art hPSC technology in combination with single-cell and spatial genomics, high-resolution imaging, and CRISPR screens.

Louisiana Patient's H5N1 Virus Shows Potential for Human-to-Human SpreadThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that viral samples from a hospitalized patient in Louisiana with severe H5N1 avian influenza show genetic mutations that could make the virus spread more easily among humans. The mutations were found in the patient's samples but not in those from backyard poultry, suggesting they occurred within the patient. While the CDC maintains the risk to the general public is low, this development highlights the virus's ability to adapt to human airways.

Bird Flu Mutations Raise Concerns, But No Human-to-Human Spread ReportedA concerning development in the ongoing bird flu outbreak: A patient in Louisiana, with underlying health conditions, tested positive for the virus with mutations that could potentially make it more transmissible between humans. However, the CDC reports that there is no evidence of the virus spreading from this patient to others.
