CAPE TOWN - Rural development is key to addressing the housing crisis in urban areas according to Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi. And with the population in Cape Town expected to grow by 1.4-million by 2030, the government is working on ways to release land for affordable housing.
The City of Cape Town is allocating R17-million to cut red tape for development applications and fast-track land release.Kubayi says it’s crucial to also focus on rural community development to alleviate the housing burden. Kubayi said, “one of the things we have done, with effect from the first is to say with bulk infrastructure in non-metro areas, we’ll be able to increase to five percent but if the provinces have lent we can increase it to 30-percent, so that there’s water, electricity and sanitation, even in the most remote areas."
"We believe once we do that, they become some sort of stimulation for the economy because businesses want to come where there is roads, where there is electricity .
