A new case of bird flu infection in a human has been reported in Louisiana, raising concerns about the spread of the virus.

Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, stated that a recent case in Louisiana brings the total number of human infections with bird flu to 61 since its detection in dairy cows in April. While the source of the Louisiana infection is under investigation, it is believed the patient had contact with sick or dead birds on their property.

Daskalakis emphasized that these birds were not commercial poultry, and there was no exposure to dairy cows or their products. He clarified that the strain of bird flu virus infecting the Louisiana patient is genetically distinct from the strain circulating in dairy cows and commercial poultry. The latter typically causes severe conjunctivitis (pink eye) and mild respiratory symptoms in humans. Daskalakis cautioned that H5 infection has been linked to severe illness and death in other countries. He directed inquiries about the patient's specific symptoms and condition to Louisiana's health and agriculture departments, noting that the state is conducting contact tracing but could not provide details.
