Naveen Andrews and Amanda Seyfried as the main cast in The Dropout

There’s been no shortage of true crime shows that adapt major headlines, but they don’t always make for compelling television. Although seeing historical figures played by interesting actors might be more gripping than certain documentary footage, a truly great show should be able to do more than simply summarize events.

The Dropout gets to the bottom of the scandal behind Theranos, the biotechnology company created by Elizabeth Holmes. The Dropout doesn't just feature an all-time great performance by Amanda Seyfried as the disgraced businesswoman, but it also asks probing questions about the flaws in the American healthcare system that allowed a manipulative influencer to present impossible solutions without any pushback. While the same subject is tackled in the excellent documentary The Inventor from Alex Gibney, The Dropout expands upon the bizarre series of events that turned Holmes into one of the most powerful individuals in America. After dropping out of college, much to the dismay of her parents Noel and Chris , Holmes worked alongside her lover, Sunny Balwani , to develop a system that could perform rapid blood tests faster than the most advanced existing medical technology. Before any of Holmes’ research was verified, however, Theranos had a presence in major pharmacies and earned endorsements from world leaders, business tycoons, and powerful investors. The Dropout presents Holmes as an anti-hero, but it's just as interested in the system that inspired her crimes as it is in her personal failings. ‘The Dropout’ Goes Beyond the Shocking Headlines in America The Dropout certainly accounts for the cataclysmic damage that the Theranos scandal caused to healthcare in its entirety; in addition to the individuals who put false hope in the notion of being scanned for diseases, the incident also doomed the possibility of a more affordable healthcare operation that would have assisted those who were either unemployed or working low-wage jobs. However, The Dropout does show an interest in what drove Holmes, and examines how her personal traumatic experiences inspired her to create an independent company where she could set her own code of ethics. The issue, however, is that Holmes’ heroes weren’t medical professionals, but entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs; her desire to change the world for the better was secondary to her personal ambition. Seyfried delivers a nearly perfect recreation of interview footage that existed of Holmes, but it takes more than a good impression to make a great performance; she finds the self-destructive qualities in a narcissistic character who has doubled down on so many lies that she is incapable of rebuking herself.Posts By Liam Gaughan Seyfried’s performance is so compelling that it makes The Dropout electrifying to watch, but the show also does an excellent job of exploring the other parties involved in the scandal. The most interesting dynamic is that of the Schultz family because of how different it is compared to Holmes and her parents. George Schultz was a former Secretary of State who believed unequivocally in Holmes and supported Theranos as a board member, but his grandson, Tyler , served as a whistleblower to inform the press about discrepancies within the facts. It may have been easy for The Dropout to seem like it was skeptical of all medical breakthroughs, but the presence of experts like pharmacologist Phyllis Gardner shows that Holmes had skeptics from the very beginning. ‘The Dropout’ Is a Compelling Story of Ambition and Genius The Dropout is an interesting case in which the real story is still developing, as new reports about Holmes’ petition for a pardon from President Donald Trump have made the show even more fascinating to rewatch. However, the most prevailing theme in The Dropout is the corrupting nature of money, as the presence of Theranos supporters like Walgreens executive Dr. Jay Rosan , venture capitalist Don Lucas , the powerful litigator David Boies , and the untrustworthy chief scientist Ian Gibbons shielded Holmes from any lasting criticism. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of The Dropout is the depiction of how Larry Ellison, played by Hart Bochner, took an interest in Theranos because of its lucrative financial possibilities. Now that the Ellisons have control of one of the most powerful conglomerates in the world, it’s all the more rare to find projects that directly criticize their actions. The Dropout is superior to other recent biopics, such as the manipulative Love Story, because the series does not simplify a complex situation. There’s empathy for Holmes as a survivor of assault, and it's not hard to see why a burdened healthcare industry was desperately looking for outside help when federal funding was coming up short. Even if the show reaches an uncomfortable conclusion about the lack of consequences that those involved faced, it does show the power of journalism; Ebon Moss-Bachrach has an important role as John Carreyrou, the Wall Street Journal writer who exposed the Theranos scandal to a wider audience. As long as those in power use their spheres of influence to avoid criticism and consequences, shows like The Dropout, which examine just how quickly scandals can escalate, will have an important story to tell.
