Hulu becomes the fourth major streaming service to recently remove content from their platform, purging two recently canceled TV series.
Hulu has become the latest major streaming service to purge exclusive content from its library. As the streaming landscape is radically shifting as companies merge and reshift their priorities toward profits and away from large content libraries, this has happened multiple times over the past year. Typically, shows are removed if their viewership draw doesn't match the licensing fees and residual costs that are required to keep them on the platform.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Per Deadline, Hulu is removing the canceled series Alaska Daily and The Company You Keep from the service early next month. Both series only lasted one season, though Alaska Daily star Hilary Swank was nominated for a Golden Globe. This decision is part of an overall $1.5-$1.8 billion in write-downs that will likely continue in the coming months.
The Future of Streaming is Looking Bleak The writing was on the wall for Hulu to jump into the fray and purge some of their lesser-performing content. Disney owns the platform, and Disney+ was recently hit with a content purge as well. The content that they removed included a swath of documentaries and feature films as well as the fantasy series Willow, which was likewise canceled after one season.
However, it is not only Disney properties that are making these purges. This recent trend kicked off with the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery, which resulted in the outright cancelation of the films Batgirl and Scoob! 2 as well as the removal of titles including their award-winning sci-fi series Westworld from their streaming service Max. Paramount+ followed suit during their merger with Showtime, removing series including Star Trek: Prodigy and Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies .
Now that Hulu has joined the fray, the future of streaming seems even more uncertain. If exclusive series are going to vanish shortly after they air, there will likely be less incentive for viewers to invest time in watching them in the first place. As streaming libraries shrink, it seems entirely possible that audiences will shrink along with them, reducing streamers' budgets for blockbuster series along with their overall rosters.
