Mark Ruffalo as Hulk snarling in Avengers Infinity War
Hulk is one of the MCU’s most destructive forces, but that doesn’t mean every enemy he’s faced has posed the same level of danger. Across the MCU timeline, Bruce Banner’s emerald alter ego smashed everything from disposable foot soldiers to godlike beings capable of ending worlds.
Some foes were physical equals, and a few fundamentally changed Hulk’s standing. Ranking Hulk’s enemies by threat level isn’t just about who hit hardest. It’s about who challenged him emotionally, psychologically, and narratively. From invading alien armies to tyrannical gods and cosmic warlords, Hulk’s battles chart the evolution of the MCU itself. The Chitauri Army The Chitauri Army may have been a global threat during The Avengers, but to Hulk, they were barely an inconvenience. As Thanos and Loki’s expendable invasion force, the Chitauri overwhelmed conventional militaries and nearly conquered New York City. However, once Hulk entered the battle, the tide turned almost instantly. Hulk smashed Leviathans out of the sky, swatted soldiers aside, and treated their advanced technology like toys. The Chitauri lacked individuality, strategy, or adaptability when facing Hulk’s raw strength. While they were dangerous to civilians and infrastructure, they posed no meaningful challenge to Hulk himself. The biggest threat the Chitauri could pose is their overwhelming numbers. Yet their hive-minded nature also meant that defeating the mothership neutralized them entirely. As far as Hulk threats go, the Chitauri were numerous but ultimately powerless against him. HYDRA Forces HYDRA’s various forces, encountered primarily in the plot-altering Avengers: Age of Ultron, were dangerous due to their weaponry rather than their physical power. Armed with advanced technology, energy weapons, and experimental enhancements, HYDRA soldiers were formidable opponents to standard Avengers. For Hulk, though, they were simply more durable punching bags. Even their fortified bases and heavy armor couldn’t slow him down for long. HYDRA’s true threat was ideological and strategic, not physical. They relied on manipulation, infiltration, and mass destruction. None of these could directly counter Hulk’s brute force. Hulk tramples through footsoldiers and concrete bunkers with ease. While their weapons could injure him briefly, HYDRA never came close to truly stopping or defeating Hulk in combat, keeping them low on the threat ranking. Thanos's Army Thanos’s full army, seen most prominently in the star-studded superhero movies Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, was far more dangerous than earlier invasion forces. Thanos’s full army includes the Chitauri, Outriders, Sakaarans, and Leviathans. The Outriders were faster, stronger, and more vicious than the Chitauri, though they are somewhat mindless. The Sakaarans are insectoid foot-soldiers armed with varying weapons, but with little inherent strength compared to the Avengers. Yet their combined might forms an invasion force capable of almost conquering Earth. Even so, Smart Hulk and Bruce Banner in the Hulkbuster still managed to tear through large numbers of them when he fought. The real threat of Thanos’ army came from sheer numbers. While they could overwhelm armies and Avengers alike, they still relied on Hulk being distracted or outnumbered. Against him one-on-one, most of these soldiers stood little chance. Cull Obsidian Cull Obsidian was one of the few members of the Black Order who could physically challenge the Hulk. A massive, heavily armored brute, Cull possessed immense strength and advanced weaponry capable of damaging even the strongest Avengers. Primarily, Cull is armed with a giant chain-hammer that can transform into a variety of weapons. Cull Obsidian is Thanos’s brute. This made him a fitting opponent for Bruce Banner in the Hulkbuster armor in Infinity War. The two fought in the Battle of Wakanda, which features the iconic moment when Hulk refuses to emerge and Bruce calls him a “big green asshole.” Cull very nearly outmatches the Hulkbuster, but Bruce manages to send him flying into the Wakandan shield, killing him. While physically comparable, Cull lacks Bruce’s adaptability and quick thinking. Cull Obsidian was a serious threat – just not quite on Hulk’s level. General Ross And The US Army General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross and the US Army represented Hulk’s first sustained threat in The Incredible Hulk. While Ross himself couldn’t fight Hulk directly, his relentless pursuit, military resources, and willingness to escalate made him dangerous. He was able to throw all the military’s capabilities at Hulk in a desperate bid to contain and control him. Tanks, helicopters, sonic cannons, and experimental weapons all pushed Hulk to his limits early in the MCU. Ross’ biggest threat wasn’t physical dominance, but persistence. He forced Hulk to stay on the run, never able to fully control his life. Over time, Hulk outgrew the military’s ability to stop him. However, early on, Ross came closer than most to actually containing or killing Hulk. That lasting impact earns him a higher ranking. Abomination Abomination remains one of Hulk’s most physically equal opponents. Created from a corrupted version of Hulk’s own power, Emil Blonsky matched Hulk in size, strength, and aggression. Their battle in Harlem in The Incredible Hulk was one of Hulk’s most brutal fights, pushing him to near exhaustion. Unlike many enemies, Abomination actively enjoyed violence and destruction. This made him unpredictable and relentless. Hulk ultimately won through ingenuity and endurance, but the fight could have gone either way. Abomination was proof that Hulk could be matched by science. That alone makes him one of Hulk’s most dangerous enemies and a lingering reminder of how unstable Hulk’s power truly is. Abomination represents Hulk’s evil potential, but not quite his strength level. Ultron Bots Ultron and his robotic army is uniquely dangerous because it forced Hulk into sustained, large-scale destruction. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ultron made hundreds of robot clones while he upgraded his own body. Individually, Ultron bots were weak, but their endless numbers made them exhausting to fight. Hulk made short work of many of these robots, tearing through them with ease. Notably, he threw Ultron out of the Quinjet with little effort. However, this alone isn’t enough to defeat Ultron, with the murderous AI quickly transferring to a different body. This is why the bots themselves weren’t the threat; Ultron’s pervasive programming and cloning made it impossible to defeat him for good. Hulk could destroy the individual bots easily, but he couldn’t stop them all fast enough to prevent collateral damage. That indirect threat to humanity makes Ultron’s army far more dangerous than it initially appears. Loki Loki never physically threatened Hulk in a prolonged sense, but his impact shouldn’t be underestimated. In The Avengers, the perfectly cast superhero character Loki manipulated global events, provoked war, and attempted planetary conquest. While Hulk famously defeated Loki in seconds, that moment doesn’t erase Loki’s danger. Subscribe to the newsletter for MCU threat breakdowns Want more MCU context? Loki’s intelligence, magic, and psychological manipulation could have been devastating if applied more strategically against Hulk. Loki understood Hulk’s instability and could have exploited it further. Ultimately, Loki underestimated Hulk, leading to his humiliating defeat. Hulk’s famed “puny god” scene immediately humbles Loki. Hulk was able to toss the villain like a rag doll. Still, as a catalyst for Hulk’s first major Avengers battle, Loki remains a significant, if brief, threat. Fenris Fenris, the monstrous wolf unleashed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, was one of the few creatures capable of physically overpowering Hulk. Their battle on the Bifrost was fierce, evenly matched, and destructive. Fenris’ immense size, durability, and feral aggression allowed it to dominate Hulk for much of the fight. Trapped between the wolf’s mighty jaws, Hulk sustained significant injury. This is a rare occurrence for Hulk, who is typically exceedingly durable. Hulk ultimately defeated Fenris by using his surroundings, throwing the beast off Asgard entirely. That victory required strategy, not just strength. Fenris represented a raw, primal threat that mirrored Hulk’s own nature. The fact that Hulk struggled so much elevates Fenris well above most of his other adversaries. Thanos Thanos is the enemy who truly broke the Hulk. Their fight at the beginning of Infinity War ended in a swift, brutal defeat for Hulk. This was the first clear loss of his MCU career. Thanos didn’t rely on weapons or the Infinity Stones, instead overpowering Hulk with pure combat skill and strength. The psychological impact was devastating, leaving Hulk unwilling to emerge for the rest of the film. No other enemy diminished Hulk so completely. Thanos proved that raw rage wasn’t enough and fundamentally changed Hulk’s role in the MCU. By every metric, physical, mental, and narrative, Thanos was Hulk’s most dangerous opponent. Their duel in Infinity War was used to demonstrate this fact, with Thanos embarrassing Hulk in a way nobody knew he could.
