Hugh Jackman reflects on Ryan Reynolds' campaign to get him to return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. '...There’s not a morning I don’t wake up where Ryan Reynolds is outside my house with posters saying, “Please.” He’s constantly asking me about it.'
Hugh Jackman recalls Ryan Reynolds' relentless effort to convince him to play Wolverine again in Deadpool 3. After almost two-decade playing Wolverine in Fox's X-Men franchise, the actor finally wrapped up his run in 2017's Logan. Despite the clamor for him to reprise the role in light of Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which resulted in Marvel Studios regaining creative control over mutants, Jackman remained adamant that he was done playing the role.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While it was ultimately Jackman's choice to reprise the role, he recalls Reynolds' attempts to convince him to wield the Adamantium claws once again. Speaking with Deadline, the actor opens up about how the Deadpool star was persistent in his efforts to bring Wolverine back in Deadpool 3. Read Jackman's full story below:
And here’s maybe a bit of a hangover from Florian. I was just driving out to the beach. It was mid-August, I had a week off from the show [The Music Man on Broadway], my first week off in eight, nine months, 10 months. And it came to me like, “I really want to do that.” And that was it. As soon as I arrived at the beach, I rang Ryan [Reynolds] just to see what the hell was going on. And then here we are. It was so quick.
Fortunately, Wolverine is known to be cranky, but it sounds as if Jackman is ramping it up for the threequel. While it's unclear why, it's sure to create a fascinating dynamic between Wolverine and Deadpool, the latter of whom tends to annoy many of his cohorts. This dynamic is certainly ripe for comedy and could play off Reynolds' and Jackman's real-life dynamic rather perfectly.
It's uncertain what Jackman's future is in the MCU beyond Deadpool 3. Wolverine can certainly return in Avengers: Secret Wars, but it may not be a part of the actor's current contract. It's worth noting that he was adamant about staying retired as Wolverine, so it's possible that his return is a one-off thing. It's also important to remember that despite coming back, Marvel Studios' Wolverine will likely be played by a new actor.
