While Auburn welcomes Alex Golesh as the new football coach, the former football coach continues to sound off on his time at Auburn., former Auburn coach Hugh Freeze talked about the 2025 season at Auburn, and the quarterback he brought out of the transfer portal, Jackson Arnold .
This was the second QB Freeze had plucked from the portal, and like Payton Thorne, the results were less than stellar. After a good debut vs. Baylor in the season opener, Arnold’s slide began, reaching top speed vs. his former team Oklahoma in the SEC opener. That began a four-game losing streak that ended vs. Arkansas, a game Arnold was benched for another transfer, Ashton Daniels. While Freeze didn’t place blame on Arnold, he made sure to point out some of Arnold’s missteps in the process. “Let’s be clear, this is not a beat up Jackson deal. It’s never, always the quarterback. There are other factors. I mean, he missed a touchdown throw here at Oklahoma to a wide-open Cam Coleman. Those plays you’ve got to make to win games. And he would say that too. And there’s also the Missouri game where we have what? Eight drops? Then there’s moments in the Georgia second half where he misses open guys, or the protection is not great, so it’s a combination of all those things. “But certainly, it didn’t work out to the level that he nor I both expected for him and our team. And that’s why I’m sitting here.” The end of the Freeze era at Auburn ended with a whimper in the form of a 10-3 loss to Kentucky at home , which saw Daniels start, only to be relieved by Arnold for a time, then go back to Daniels to end the game.
