The UK's smart motorway system was hit by a major software failure yesterday and now campaign groups want the system axed entirely.

The M3 smart motorway near Longcross in Surrey, which was affected by the software breakdown

The Dynac system – which includes signs, signals and stopped vehicle detection technology – ceased working at around 8.30am and was not restored until 10.30am. Only the east and south-east were unaffected.
