Having trouble accessing some of your favorite websites and services today? You're not alone, as a huge swath of the internet has been experiencing issues with outages reported across numerous sites.
We’ve spoken to founder of Yale Privacy Lab, and CEO of Ivy Cyber, Sean O’Brien about today’s AWS outage. When asked whether the two year gap without a significant issue was surprising, O’Brien told us “It’s impressive uptime, but not unexpected.
AWS has matured significantly, yet complexity only defers risk, it doesn’t eliminate it. This isn’t proof of stability, it’s proof of luck holding steady in a dense stack of interdependencies. “I expect a waterfall effect over the course of the next few months, and we could be in a very long Q4 in an already volatile economy, perhaps with the most pain in cryptocurrency markets.” And O’Brien doesn’t expect Amazon to suffer too much when it comes to reputational damage. “AWS will recover for the same reason Amazon always recovers: most Western companies simply can’t migrate away. But architecturally this reignites the debate about monocultures and the Big Tech cloud. “Most organizations have traded local resilience for global convenience and, by the way, usually sell the privacy of their users down the river with centralized cloud computing as well.“
